the regulator function is to provide a constant output voltage for the load connected in parallel with it regardless of the ripple at the supply voltage or the variation in the load current and the zener diode will continue to regulate the voltage until the current diode is below the minimum value of IZ (min) . This allows the current to flow forward as usual, but it will also be possible to flow in the opposite direction when the voltage is above a certain value - the breakdown voltage is known as the Zener voltage.
